RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - June Atkinson and John Tedesco have bucked conventional wisdom that says most voters aren't paying attention to the election until after Labor Day. The two candidates for Superintendent of Public Instruction debated this week before the North Carolina Alliance for Public Charter Schools.
Atkinson, a Democrat, currently holds the state's top elected education job. Tedesco, a Republican, is currently a member of the Wake County school board.
In the debate, the candidates discussed, among other things, the state-run lottery and the impact on public education as well as charter schools.
Net proceeds from the lottery are transferred to the state's education system. This week, lottery Executive Director Alice Garland announced the lottery had sent $457 million to education coffers during fiscal year 2012, which ended June 30.
