RALEIGH, (AP) — A former Virginia congressman is a third-party candidate for president trying to get write-in votes count for him this November in North Carolina.

Constitution Party nominee Virgil Goode said he plans to visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections on Monday to turn in paperwork and petition signatures so that he's a certified write-in candidate.

Goode said North Carolina's ballot access laws made it almost impossible to get his name on the ballot. A political party or independent candidate needed more than 80,000 signatures.

A write-in candidate for a statewide race needs just 500 signatures from qualified voters to ensure votes are counted.

Goode served as a Democrat, Republican and independent at different times during his 22 years in Congress.
