RALEIGH, (AP) — The final full day of campaigning for North Carolina's primary had the top candidates trying to grab the political spotlight away from the proposed constitutional amendment on marriage also on Tuesday's ballot.

Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton and former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge visited television stations Monday in the largest cities for interviews to try to persuade voters in the Democratic primary for governor. State Rep. Bill Faison planned to meet with campaign volunteers.

The marriage amendment was still getting most of the attention, contributing to a record number of voters during the early-voting period ending Saturday. A state election board official predicted primary turnout could exceed the 37 percent in 2008.

Voters also will cast ballots in races from president and Congress to the Council of State and the Legislature.
