LAURINBURG, N.C. (AP) -  A retired Scotland County pediatrician who helped pass a statewide smoking ban for bars and restaurants won't run for re-election this year to the North Carolina Senate.

Democratic Sen. Bill Purcell said Tuesday he'll serve out his two-year term representing four south-central counties but feels it's time to move on after being first appointed to the Senate 15 years ago. He said he wants more time with his children and grandchildren.

The 80-year-old Purcell was the Senate's chief proponent of the 2009 smoking ban law in a state known as the nation's leading flue-cured tobacco producer. He also got laws approved requiring helmets for children riding bicycles and ATVs.

Purcell also served as a budget-writer on health issues when Democrats were in charge during the 2009-10 session.
