CHAPEL HILL, (AP) — A memorial service has been set for Wednesday morning in Chapel Hill for former University of North Carolina President William Friday.

Friday personified higher education in North Carolina even after he stepped down after 30 years as president of the University of North Carolina system in 1986. He died at his home in Chapel Hill on Oct. 12. He was 92.

The service is set at 10 a.m. at Memorial Hall on campus. UNC-TV will broadcast the service live.

Gov. Beverly Perdue has ordered that flags remain at half-staff until Wednesday evening.

Friday had suffered a mild heart attack in 2008 and had open heart surgery the following year. He was hospitalized this summer to get a permanent pacemaker. He had not been ill prior to his death.
