The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that lawmakers cut $125,000 for Planned Parenthood, a move that could have forced the closure of its clinic in Durham. The clinic does not provide abortions, but does provide contraceptives, pap smears and breast exams and also tests for diabetes, high cholesterol and sexually transmitted diseases.

 

The organization is getting $426,000 in federal funding. Emily Adams with Planned Parenthood says the clinic will be able to increase the number of patients it sees from about 500 to about 2,000 annually.

 

Republican lawmakers had said women could go to county health departments.
