WILMINGTON, (AP) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol is on a hiring blitz just a year after budget cuts prompted a hiring freeze.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that June 1 is the deadline for applying to the patrol's basic school — a 29 week course to train new troopers. Patrol officials hope they get 400 to 600 applicants.
Only 59 will be accepted and officials think only about 45 will graduate.

Applicants are tested including a 1.5 mile run and a body-fat composition check. There is also a lie detector test, background check and psychological evaluation.
