CHARLOTTE, (AP) — Operators of sweepstakes parlors in North Carolina are preparing to expand operations after getting a favorable ruling from the Court of Appeals last month.

The Charlotte Observer reported there are between 700 and 800 such businesses across North Carolina. The Internet Based Sweepstakes Organization represents many of them and reports revenue totals between $500 million and $1 billion annually.
New sweepstakes parlors are about to open in Charlotte and Raleigh and officials in Concord say they've gotten requests from people on how to establish the businesses.
Many of the games resemble slot machines, with the levers. Others are similar to card games.
The Court of Appeals ruled the Legislature cannot categorically ban the games.
The sweepstakes games developed after state lawmakers banned video poker in 2007.
