FAYETTEVILLE, (AP) — The bridge on U.S. 301 over the Cape Fear River in Fayetteville will be closing next month.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that the North Carolina Transportation Department says the four-lane bridge is obsolete. The bridge will be closed for two years while it's replaced.

Transportation department engineer Jason Salisbury says the bridge probably needed replacement some time ago.

The state awarded a contract to a South Carolina company in August to start work on replacing the bridge. Salisbury says the contract calls for the work to be completed by mid-April 2015.

Detour signs will be posted on Interstate 95 to direct motorists to take a different exit to the downtown area.
