RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina hog farm operator has been ordered to pay $1 million in restitution for violations of the federal Clean Water Act.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina Thomas G. Walker will announce at a media conference Wednesday that the money paid by Freedman Farms will be provided to the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust for wetlands preservation.

A federal judge ordered Clarkton-based Freedman in February to pay the $1 million restitution and an additional $500,000 fine after the company was found guilty of dumping hog waste into a stream leading to the Waccamaw River.
