RALEIGH,(SGRToday.com) - We've heard of solar and wind power projects in our state, but now a Virginia-based energy company is planning to build a swine waste facility in Duplin County, according to a filing with the North Carolina Utilities Commission. The goal is to use the pig poop produced at local hog farms to produce electricity, according to the Triangle Business Journal.

The plant will be located in Albertson and is planned to open late this year.

North Carolina's 2007 renewable energy law requires that certain percentages of electricity be produced from alternative sources. According to the newspaper, 0.2 percent must be produced by swine waste by 2018.

The company has set up an office in Cary.
