NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, (AP) — Emergency sandbags are being placed to protect eight oceanfront buildings at Topsail Reef on the North Carolina coast.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported the sandbags protecting the 240 homes in the buildings are considered a temporary measure.

The area was eroded by the winds and tides of Hurricane Irene and other storms. The work along a quarter mile of beach should be finished by the middle of June.

The sandbags are expected to remain in place until work on realigning the channel in New River Inlet is complete. That project is expected to reduce the threat of erosion along Topsail Reef.
