WILMINGTON, (AP) — Wilmington's mayor says it might require a tax increase to build the minor-league baseball stadium city leaders have sought for years.

A city council meeting next week will consider negotiating with the Atlanta Braves and Mandalay Baseball Properties to build a stadium and attract a minor-league team.

Plans are for the city and the Los Angeles-based owner of minor league franchises to spend six months figuring out the potential cost and location of a Wilmington stadium and finding teams available to relocate.

Mayor Bill Saffo says a deal would likely involve the city buying property and building a 6,000-seat stadium costing between $35 million and $40 million.

Wilmington has been without a minor-league team for a decade.
