RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Data from the Office of Personnel Management shows that 8,973 people applied for federal retirement in August, the second highest monthly number so far this year and 15 percent more than in August 2011.

The Federal Times reports the office responded to complaints of slow processing of applications by hiring more than 50 additional people to address the onslaught and catch up on the backlog.
