RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The number of people enrolled in the federal program that provides low-income families in the United States with assistance has reached a new high. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps, served 46.67 million Americans in June, according to the USDA, which administers the program.

Roughly one out of seven Americans now receive the government aid.

The food stamp enrollment figure is more than twice the program's 2003 enrollment, which was 21.25 million. Since 2008, food stamp rolls have increased by 18.5 million.

Last fiscal year, it cost the federal government $75.7 bilion to administer the program.
