RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) – Gov. Beverly Perdue’s office has been asked by the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce to provide documents related to reports by Carolina Journal that confidential Bureau of Labor Statistics employment data was provided to the governor’s office in advance of its scheduled release.
The letter, to Gov. Perdue from Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN), is dated December 21, 2011. It gives the governor’s office until January 4 to turn over the requested materials.
“Unemployment data can affect the confidence of markets, consumers, and employers,” said Chairman Kline in a news release. “Federal law provides safeguards to ensure no one uses this information to unfair gain. We must pursue any and all allegations of improper handling of sensitive data.”
In the letter, the following material is requested by Kline:
* A copy of the State of North Carolina’s cooperative agreement with BLS
* All documents and communications related to the protocols your office and ESCNC have put in place to protect against the unauthorized dissemination of this information
* All documents and communications relating to the potential unauthorized release of BLS data
* All documents and communications between your office and ESCNC relating to unemployment data
* All documents and communications between ESCNC and U.S. Department of Labor relating to unemployment data
