Former Texas Superintendent Faces 3 1/2 Years In Prison For Scheme That Sought Federal Cash PDF Print E-mail

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The former superintendent of the El Paso school district will be sentenced this week for a scheme that involved pushing low-performing students to drop out to improve his schools' standardized test scores.

 
Lorenzo Garcia pleaded guilty in June in a fraud case that could put him behind bars for up to 3½ years. He's scheduled to learn his fate on Friday.
 
Garcia targeted sophomores, pressuring them to drop out because of their poor performance, their tardiness or because of suspicion they were actually living in Mexico and crossing the border to attend classes.
 
The plan was designed to help El Paso schools qualify for federal money and ensure the superintendent got hefty bonuses.
 
Now the district is trying to contact ousted students to offer help completing their educations.
