RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - In a 5 to 4 vote, the Wake County school board voted Tuesday afternoon to fire Superintendent Tony Tata, who had led the state's largest school system for less than two years. Tata will receive a payout of $253,625.

The vote broke along political party lines. All five Democrats voted yes to fire Tata. All four Republicans voted no.

Democrats said the firing was not about politics but said it came after an accumulation of events.

Republicans said the firing was political.

Tata's contract ran through December 2014. He was hired by the former Republican majority of the board.

Tata had been in the spotlight over the past several weeks as problems with bus routes plagued the system at the beginning of the school year.
