RALEIGH, SGRToday.com - Stunning video of Wednesday's Charlotte/Mecklenburg school bus inferno, as well as the charred bus itself, are likely to be studied by a Freightliner inspector who's heading to Charlotte in the wake of the fire. The inspector will arrive Monday, according to the Charlotte Observer.
The Charlotte/Mecklenburg bus driver is credited with safely evacuating the six children who were aboard bus No. 295. No one was injured. Video of the incident has made national news. It shows smoke and flames pouring out of the bus windows. Sirens can be heard, signaling the arrival of firefighters. One firefighter can be seen climbing aboard the bus to douse the flames. White smoke then engulfs most of the bus.
The newspaper reports that state Department of Public Instruction transportion chief Derek Graham told the paper one out of 10 buses are inspected by the state each year and that local systems are expected to check out their buses every month.
