RALEIGH - UNC-System President Thomas Ross will recommend to the Board of Governors, tuition and fee increases under 10 percent for in-state undergraduates at all system schools.
The state’s sputtering economy is one of the main reasons Ross said he will recommend lower tuition increases than the campuses.
The board was greeted Thursday with a letter signed from nearly two dozen former Board of Governors opposing tuition increases.
Several universities proposed tuition and fee increases above that mark. The average tuition and fee increases of 9.6 percent systemwide. Here are the actual proposed increases by the UNC System universities:
North Carolina State - 12.4%
UNC-Chapel Hill - 15.6%
East Carolina - 12.2%
North Carolina A&T - 10%
UNC-Charlotte - 6.5%
UNC-Greensboro - 10%
Appalachian State - 12.3%
Fayetteville State - 6.5%
North Carolina Central - 9.9%
UNC-Pembroke - 7.1%
UNC-Wilmington - 18.6%
Western Carolina - 13.3%
Winston-Salem State - 6.5%
Elizabeth City State - 10%
UNC-Asheville - 15.8%
School of the Arts - 15.9%
Chancellors have also cited the need to retain faculty through pay raises in their requests for more tuition revenues.
The Board of Governors will vote on the increases in February and forward them to the General Assembly for final approval. |
