RALEIGH, (AP) — The outgoing chancellor of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill has told his successor that dealing with athletics has become the most important part of the job.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that Chancellor Holden Thorp says that should not be the case.

Thorp says the problems can overwhelm a president. The school has been involved in sports-related problems for more than two years.

Thorp is leaving July 1 to become provost of Washington University in St. Louis, a Division III school without big-money sports.

Interim Dartmouth College President Carol Folt is replacing Thorp in Chapel Hill.

A panel created by Thorp meets Friday to discuss ideas on the proper balance between academics and athletics. Thorp wants the panel to consider giving more authority to athletic directors.

DURHAM, (AP) — A Florida doctor and his wife are giving $20 million to expand Duke University's sports medicine program.

The school said Thursday that Dr. Steven Scott and his wife, Rebecca, have agreed to provide the money for clinical and research development, faculty recruiting and retention, and support for sports medicine training.

Duke President Richard Brodhead says the gift will have a long-lasting impact.

Scott is a member of the steering committee for Duke Forward, a $3 billion university fundraising campaign. He says he hopes the gift will benefit the sports medicine department as well as Duke's School of Medicine.

He and his wife live in Boca Raton, Fla.

The couple committed $10 million to Duke in October for a building to house the ticket offices, a team store and training rooms.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Several dozen states are looking for an alternative to the GED test because of concerns that a new version is more costly and will no longer be offered in a pencil and paper format.

Forty states have participated in a group that's considering options for the high school equivalency test. New York, Montana and New Hampshire announced last month they are switching to test providers that offer a cheaper alternative to the GED. Missouri also has requested bids.

At $120, the new GED that debuts in January is double the cost of the current test. Several states subsidize some or all of the expense, but the student share is expected to rise.

GED officials say the new test is cheaper to administer and is changing because of tougher state standards.

CHAPEL HILL, (AP) — The North Carolina public university governing board is ready to name the new leader for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The UNC Board of Governors said Wednesday it will hold a special meeting Friday to elect a chancellor for the country's oldest public university. A 21-member university search committee has been working since October with a higher-education headhunter.

The new hire will replace Holden Thorp, who announced in 2012 that he would leave in June after two years of scandals involving academic fraud, improper travel spending by fundraisers, special treatment for athletes, and allegations that campus sexual assaults weren't fully reported.

Thorp is leaving his undergraduate alma mater after four years as UNC-Chapel Hill's chancellor to become the chief academic officer of Washington University in St. Louis.
